Marikka’s Rules and Refereeing Standards

League Play

  • Maximum of five players on the court at a time, with at least two girls in rotation at all times (except in B quads)

    • Teams with four players are not permitted to play quads format and must continue to rotate

    • If subbing in players, players must rotate into the court at the same position each time

  • Ghost rule will be enforced for teams with less than five players

  • Substitutes from any other team are permitted

  • Forfeits:

    • If a team is not present or complete 10 minutes after the scheduled start time, they forfeit the first set

    • If a team is still not present or complete 20 minutes after the scheduled start time, they forfeit the match

    • Teams with less than two girls may play their match with or without substitutes after the forfeit has been recorded

  • One time out per set

  • Matches consist of three sets played to 21-21-15 (win by 2, capped at 25-25-17) via rally scoring, always playing a third set regardless of the outcome of the first two, for tournament seeding

  • Third set only: When the first and second sets split, switch sides once the leading team reaches 8 points

  • Balls coming into contact with the wires above the far court will be replayed if they are pursued, playable, and within sand boundaries

  • Yellow and red cards are available to use at the referee’s discretion

Tournament Play

  • Matches are capped at 25-25-17, only playing a third set when the first two split

  • Subs:

    • All players must be on the team roster prior to playing in a match

    • Players from other teams in the same league may not sub during tournament

    • Once a player has played with a team in tournament, they may not play with another team in that league

  • Ghost rule will be enforced for teams with less than five players

Playing Rules for ALL leagues:

  • No Contact with the net whatsoever

  • The ball must cross the net inside of the antenna and if the ball makes contact with the antenna it is considered out of bounds

  • Feet may cross under the net as long as they do not interfere with the play by making contact with opponents

  • No Feet (except in B, which must be planted) or use of body parts below the waist

  • No re-toss on serves; the ball cannot be caught or let drop

  • Serving must be behind the line and contact is made within court boundaries

  • Players may not play off fences, mesh nets, or walls

  • No attacking the serve

  • No jumping in front of the 10’ line if you’re a back row player

  • Hard driven balls (overhand serves or hits, first contact) resulting in a double contact are considered playable

  • Players may use hands to receive serve

D League Refereeing

  • No jump serves – feet must be planted in the sand when serving

  • No blatant carries – contact under the ball with an open hand

  • No throws – ball must make clean contact with the hand, resulting in a sound; if you can’t hear the ball being hit, it is most likely being thrown

  • Doubles will be called if when setting the ball (with forward intent) the ball goes backwards instead

C League Refereeing

  • +/- designations are for scheduling purposes and a reflection of estimated skill level only; players should expect C level calls regardless of which they choose

  • No carries – this includes under handed “scoops”; the ball must make clean contact with the hand, resulting in a sound

  • No throws – ball must make clean contact with the hand, resulting in a sound; if you can’t hear the ball being hit, it is most likely being thrown

  • No doubles on second or third touch – doubles are recognized as balls making uneven contact with hands, resulting in spinning or rotating with vigor; slight rotations are expected and acceptable

Monday B League Refereeing

  • No doubles on second or third touch – doubles are recognized as balls making uneven contact with hands, resulting in spinning or rotating with vigor; slight rotations are expected and acceptable

  • No carries or throws

Friday B League Quads Refereeing

  • No doubles on second or third touch – doubles are recognized as balls making uneven contact with hands; slight rotation is acceptable

  • No open hand tips

  • No carries or throws

  • Shoulders must be square if setting/pushing the ball over the net
